What is included in the Program for Arthritis?
Arthritis is a specific form of degenerative disease, that appears more commonly in the bones and joints.
Typically the shoulders and the hips are diagnosed but most of the time multiple joints are involved. Spinal arthritis or spinal degenerative disease is common in older dogs, large breed dogs and breeds with long backs that are more prone to injury.
Most clients and even many veterinarians, have fallen for the drug company marketing ploys of trying to sell you a “bigger and better” pain medicine while ignoring the underlying cause.
This approach could be DISASTROUS for the joint cartilage in the long run – even leading to the dreaded end stage of “bone-on-bone” arthritis when there is no more cartilage left – believe me, you want to avoid that at all costs!
Often these drugs arwe also associated with obesity, thyroid disease or anatomical abnormalities. Infrequently there are complications like bacterial or viral or fungal infections in joints, which is why it is important to have a very thorough head-to toe examination plus diagnostic lab tests done on your pet before you start an arthritis program.
Our approach is a “MULTI-MODAL” effort to attack the problem from several fronts.
We institute the following:
- 1. A Doctor guided weight loss program
- 2. A diet adaptation to more anti-inflammatory ingredients
- 3. Handle all concomitant diseases like allergies, toxicities, deficiencies, liver, kidney or heart pathology – arthritis is often a symptom of more serious underlying problems.
- 4. Some massage and accupressure techniques you can do at home
- 5. Chinese herbal or western herbal supplements, nutraceuticals and detoxifying mushroom therapy
This usually is all that is needed AT FIRST in most cases of grade 1and 2 arthritis to begin with.
BUT as it advances to grade 3 or higher a
MUCH more aggressive approach is needed like anti-oxidant injections, PGAG injections and a course of LASER therapy – especially if it involves the spine.
